David Cohen, President, Karlin Asset Management. Karlin is a Los Angeles, CA-based investment firm with an equity capital base of over $1 billion. Mr. Cohen has over 20 years of experience in principal investing, private equity, corporate finance, and capital markets. He has been an active private investor in operating companies and securities. He was formerly a principal at Quellos Group (now BlackRock), a global alternative investment firm. For most of the 1990s, Mr. Cohen was responsible for the public and private investments of Pacific Holdings, which is comprised of over 25 operating companies, had revenues of over $7 billion and was recognized as one of largest U.S. private companies. Mr. Cohen started his career as a capital markets professional at Lazard Freres. He holds a B.S. from Boston University, attended graduate school at Sydney University (Australia) as a Rotary Foundation Scholar, and holds a Master’s Degree in Finance from Cambridge University (England).
David R. Ewing, Chief Operations Officer, InfoPlus International. InfoPlus is a privately held IT consultancy that provides project management consulting, technology services, and comprehensive business and technology capabilities for Fortune 1000 companies. Prior to InfoPlus, Mr. Ewing was the Chief Information Officer of Destination Rewards, a provider of rewards and loyalty platforms for the financial services industry. Previously, from 2006 to 2008, he was President, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Privacy Officer for CoVibe TECH, and is listed in multiple patent applications covering aspects of the CoVibe TECH core technology. Since 1998, Mr. Ewing has also served as President of D.R. Ewing & Associates, Inc., a company that provides executive and information system consulting services to large corporate clients, including UBS and Wells Fargo. Prior to that, from 1994 to 1998, he was Chief Information Officer, Chief Technology Officer, and Corporate Senior Vice President, Systems for E*TRADE. Prior to that, Mr. Ewing was International Director of Information Systems for Nellcor-Puritan Bennet; Manager, Management Consulting Practice for Price Waterhouse; Manager, Information Systems for Charles Schwab & Co., Inc.; and IT Applications Development Manager for Hibernia Bank in San Francisco, California. HVS is a full-service consulting and valuation firm specializing in hotel, gaming, and hospitality properties worldwide. Ms. Mellen’s professional experience includes consulting and appraisal positions with HVS New York, Morgan Guaranty Trust, Laventhol & Horwath, and Helmsley-Spear Hospitality Services, Inc. in New York City and Harley-Little Associates in Toronto, Canada. She gained her operational experience at the Plaza Hotel in New York. She has a B.S. degree in Hotel Administration from Cornell University and holds the following designations: MAI (Appraisal Institute), CRE (Counselor of Real Estate), FRICS (Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), and ISHC (International Society of Hospitality Consultants).
George Miller, General Partner, Sonde Structured Income Fund. In 2010, Mr. Miller co-founded Sonde, a private mezzanine investment fund based in the Southeast U.S. Prior to Sonde, he was Chief Executive Officer of Southland Log Homes in Columbia, SC. Prior to that, he was a partner with ITC Holding Company, the largest private equity investor in the Southeast U.S. In 1992, Mr. Miller founded Sirrom Capital Corporation, a New York Stock Exchange-listed company that became one of the nation’s largest providers of mezzanine debt and was sold to Finova Corporation in 1999. Prior to that, Mr. Miller was an investment banker for J. C. Bradford and Equitable Securities in Nashville, Tennessee. He graduated with honors from the University of Tennessee in 1981. After graduation, Mr. Miller spent the next four years as an officer in the United States Marine Corps, where he participated in Operation Urgent Fury on the island of Grenada and was a member of the Multi-National Peace Keeping Forces in Beirut, Lebanon. In 1987, Mr. Miller received an M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He currently serves on the boards of directors of Conserv Group and E- Company Store, and has served on the boards of Sirrom Capital, Nova Systems, PRE Solutions, and PTEK Holdings.
Kevin Shields, President, Griffin Capital Corporation. Mr. Shields founded Griffin, based in Los Angeles, CA, in 1995. Griffin is a private real estate investment company that owns and manages a portfolio of 40 assets in 13 states, including over 8.5 million square feet with an approximate value of $1 billion. He is also the Chairman and President of The GC Net Lease REIT, Inc., a public, non-traded real estate investment trust. Before founding Griffin, Mr. Shields was a Senior Vice President and head of the Structured Real Estate Finance Group at Jefferies & Company, Inc. and a Vice President in the Real Estate Finance Department of Salomon Brothers Inc in both New York and Los Angeles. Over the course of his 25-year real estate and investment banking career, Mr. Shields has structured and closed over $3 billion of real estate acquisitions and financings. Mr. Shields earned J.D., M.B.A., and B.S. degrees from the University of California at Berkeley. He is a licensed securities professional, holding Series 7, 63, 24 and 27 licenses, as well as a California Real Estate Broker license. Mr. Shields is a full member of the Urban Land Institute and guest lecturer at the Fisher Center for Real Estate at the University of California, Berkeley.
Carl Stratton, Managing Director, Traversi Capital Advisors, LLC, has over 25 years of senior-level experience as a financial advisor, chief financial officer, operating executive, principal investor, and entrepreneur in a wide range of industries. Prior to joining Traversi Capital Advisors, Mr. Stratton founded Stratton Ltd., a provider of part-time and project chief financial officer services to small-to-medium-sized businesses in the Philadelphia, PA region. His experience prior to Stratton Ltd. includes the founding of Carlton Services, LLC, an outsourced bookkeeping firm, and 2020 Growth Partners, a management and financial consulting firm. He also held Chief Financial Officer positions at Sirrom Capital Corporation (an NYSE-traded specialty finance company), PRE Solutions, Inc. (a venture-backed start-up that grew to be the largest processor of prepaid telecom transactions), International Citrus Corporation (a public citrus and real estate company), Dove Computer Corporation (an Apple Macintosh peripherals manufacturer). He also held various engineering and manufacturing positions at DuPont. Mr. Stratton holds an M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a B.S.
